Job Description:
Position Title: Director of Northfield Community Nursery School
Reports To: Northfield Community Nursery School Board of Directors
Calendar: Year one start date – July 1, 2009
Annual calendar – August through July
Summer Hours

Responsibilities:
Establish an ongoing environment that is welcoming to students, parents, staff, and volunteers and develop programs and processes that protect the welfare, health and safety of all the children enrolled in Northfield Community Nursery School, treating all with respect and dignity.

Program Administration
• Assume responsibility for the daily operation of the nursery school program
• Act as liaison between the nursery school Board of Directors, the nursery school staff, and the Nursery school families
• Act as liaison between the nursery school and the church
• Provide community outreach, becoming involved in relevant organizations and educational

Programs
• Attend the nursery school Board meetings and Executive Committee meetings, as well as
Other relevant committees, as needed
• Act as a liaison with community nursery school programs by attending meetings and
Conferences as deemed appropriate
• Maintain policies and procedures for program operation

Program Operation
• Supervise registration and enrollment
• Manage program data including class lists
• Assist in preparing the annual student directory and parent handbook
• Facilitate preparation for and implementation of parent teacher conferences
• Plan school year calendar approved by the Executive Committee
• Work with the preschool Board and staff on the assessment of playground needs
• Post and maintain a working calendar of program activities
• Outline expectations for and monitor communications with parents
• Purchase equipment and supplies

Program Development
• Remain current on issues and trends in early childhood education
• Oversee ongoing NAEYC accreditation
• Encourage and provide opportunities for team building and staff collaboration
• Provide a vision for program development and change
• Implement strategies to recruit and maintain enrollment

Budget Responsibilities
• Identify and prepare applications/paperwork for outside funding sources, such as state and federal programs
• Prepare payroll information

Program Supervision
• Assure that monthly class newsletters are given to parents
• Communicate weekly with staff, keeping teachers informed of current program
Information
• Conduct monthly staff meetings
• Arrange for teachers and assistants to complete training annually
• Evaluate teachers on an annual basis
• Dismiss or suspend nursery school employees as determined necessary by both the director
and the personnel committee.
• Prepare letters of intent for staff
• Interview and select substitute teachers
• Develop substitute teacher procedures
• Be prepared to substitute teach
• Recruit and select applicants to fill permanent staff vacancies with approval from the

Executive Committee
• Supervise implementation of licensing and safety procedures
• Supervise implementation of program curriculum
• Maintain staff records
• Maintain a visible presence to staff, students and preschool families
• Coordinates and attends all preschool functions

Education & Experience Required
In order to meet DCFS requirements for Director of a Nursery School (Licensing Standards Section 407.130), all qualified applicants must have:
• Sixty semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university with 18 semester hours related directly to childcare and/or child development from birth to age 6.

Required Skills
• Excellent organization and communication skills
• Must have a strong understanding of early childhood development
• Ability to understand and manage the complexities of a nursery school program
• Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with parents, children, and

• Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends as necessary
